Fifteen (15) Hasami Academy students (3 male and 12 female) from partner community and residential care facilities in Zambales, Bataan and Pampanga gathered together last April 23 to 25, 2018 at ACTION Chikara Project Studio, Olongapo City for the 6th Annual Hair Camp. Through this yearly event, the students were able to learn new haircutting and hairstyling techniques from volunteer professional Filipino and Japanese Hairstylists namely Mr. Jude Hipolito, Ms. Rose Velasco, Mr. Yoshinori Kitahara, Mr. Kazuhito Koshigaya and Mr. Hiroshi Koyomazaki.
The students who came from the following partner organizations of ACTION: Tayo ang Tinig at Gabay Inc., People’s Recovery, Empowerment and Development Assistance (PREDA) Foundation Home for Girls, Social Development Center, Center for Youth, Jireh Children’s Home Inc., Philippines Outreach Centre Children’s Home, SOS Children’s Village Bataan and Duyan ni Maria, had fun-filled learning and mentoring sessions with the instructors regarding hair ironing, hair shampooing, blow drying and haircutting. The styles which they demonstrated were combination of one-length cut, graduation cut and layering. The instructors also taught them about the three steps in haircutting: (1) basic cut-cross check, (2) refining and (3) basic shape.
During the Hair Camp, the students had the chance to showcase their skills by styling the models with the haircut they have learned through the years in the Hasami Academy.
“If you have passion and interest in haircutting, you will become hairstylists someday,” said Mr. Jude Hipolito, the owner of the JuRo Salon Exclusif in Taguig City, during his inspirational speech. He and Ms. Velasco also reminded the students that the key to success is determination. Thus, the students should always continue to practice what they have learned from the Hair Camp.
An inspirational message was also shared by Mr. Kitahara. He narrated that before he became a professional hairstylist in Japan, he was caught by the police for always fighting with gangs. Until one day, he went to a barbershop and it started to change his life. He pursued his passion in haircutting and hairstyling and now he is one of the most popular professional hairstylists in Japan. Another Japanese instructor, Mr. Koyomazaki, added that if the students want to become professional hairstylists someday, they should take the training seriously. He added that while being serious with the training, they should also enjoy it.
Certificates of Participation were awarded to the participants for successfully completing the three-day Annual Hair Camp 2018. As a sign of appreciation to the instructors for their contribution and support to Hasami no Chikara project, the Founder and Executive Director of ACTION, Mr. Hajime Yokota, also awarded them with Certificates of Appreciation.
